Omega three fatty acids are creating quite a lot of excitement and media coverage due to their potential health benefits.

What are the health benefits of omega three?Krill oil, fish oil, flax seed oil and squid oils all claim to be the best omega three sources. However, all of the different sources of omega three can be quite confusing to the consumer as well as the physician. What is the best source of omega three fatty acids? Which omega three oils have been studied the most? Where should you purchase your omega three fatty acids? Whom do you trust when purchasing omega three fatty acids?

Clearing up the confusion surrounding omega three fish oils

Recent negative media publicity on ‘Good Morning America’ in March 2010 alluded to the fact that many of the fish oils being purchased over the counter at some of the local commercial wholesale clubs and drugstores were contaminated with higher than acceptable amounts of PCB, a persistent organic pollutant banned in 1979 but still present in ocean waters.. This combined with Whole Foods Markets discontinuing all krill supplements sold in their stores for sustainability concerns has really created a lot of confusion about omega three.

Fish oil and cardiovascular disease

Omega three essential fatty acids are crucial for life and essential for optimal health. Demographic studies indicate that populations that consume more fresh fish are less prone to a variety of diseases. Populations that consume higher than normal levels of cold water fish have less heart disease and are less likely to have a fatal heart attack. The Inuit Indians of Greenland are an example of a particular culture that reaps the benefits of a diet higher in omega three fatty acids. The cultures that consume more cold water fatty fish seem to be less likely to have cardiovascular disease.

Sources of omega three

Wild Alaskan salmonMost of the large clinical studies that have documented the positive health benefits of omega three fatty acids have used fish consumption or fish oil consumption. There are thousands of studies supporting the positive health benefits of omega three from fish and fish oil. The FDA has given a “qualified health claim” for omega three fatty acids EPA and DHA stating “supportive but not conclusive research shows that consumption of EPA and DHA may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.” The medical community has readily accepted these positive health benefits and is prescribing and recommending fish oil supplements to their patients. Many consumers are also becoming proactive in their health and practicing prevention by consuming more fish or purchasing fish oil supplements from the drug store or health food store. However, one must be careful with consuming too much fish because of the potential contaminants that are in particular types of fish. With all of the contaminants that are accidentally and purposely deposited into the oceans it is becoming more and more difficult to recommend consuming large amounts of fish. I personally feel that most sardines, wild Alaskan salmon and wild caught rainbow trout are still species of fish that are relatively safe. I do not recommend people to consume large amounts of tuna, grouper, sword fish, redfish or other large predatory fish, and I am reluctant to eat anything from the Gulf of Mexico since the BP oil spill. I highly recommend people avoid farm raised fish especially farm raised salmon. Farm raised salmon have a higher ratio of omega six than wild caught salmon and are relatively high in contaminants and contain a synthetic astaxanthin (a dye in place of real astaxanthin) that gives it the orange color.

Ethyl ester fish oil versus triglyceride form fish oil – which is better?

Omega three fish oil basically comes in two readily available forms, ethyl ester fish oil and triglyceride form fish oil. I do not recommend taking the ethyl ester version of omega three fish oil for a variety of reasons. The ethyl ester form of fish oil is highly unstable and therefore it can oxidize and become rancid quicker than the triglyceride form of fish oil. If you open up a capsule of fish oil and it smells really bad and then you bite into it and it tastes really bad then it is possible it is rancid. This is one of the reasons many people get a nasty after taste or problems burping up an unpleasant taste from the ethyl ester form of fish oil. Studies also indicate that the triglyceride form omega three fish oil absorbs much faster and more efficiently therefore increasing bio availability. Most fish oil that is being sold OTC or as a prescription in the United States is the ethyl ester version because it is significantly less expensive to manufacture. The final phase in the purification of a triglyceride form fish oil requires the ethyl ester molecule to be cleaved off and replaced with a triglyceride molecule thus making it a more natural omega three fish oil than the ethyl ester version. The triglyceride form omega three fish oils are highly concentrated and highly refined and purified making them the ideal choice for consumers. If you do not know if your fish oil is an ethyl ester version or triglyceride version then call the customer service department on the bottle. You can also squeeze the contents of your fish oil into a Styrofoam cup and see what happens. If the cup starts to melt after 15 to 20 minutes then you have an ethyl ester version. However, some products with very low concentrations of ethyl ester fish oil may not melt the cup. When looking for a triglyceride form fish oil look for levels of the essential fatty acids EPA and DHA that will truly have some effect. I recommend finding an omega three fish oil supplement that has an EPA between 400-450 per gel cap and a DHA of around 250-300 per gel cap. These are the levels that I have studied using the latest in omega three testing and have found that the consumption of two gel caps a day of this concentration can increase your omega index to a desirable level over 8%. The omega 3 index measures the concentration of EPA and DHA as a percent of total essential fatty acids in the red blood cell membranes. Recent research is proving that the desirable level for cardio protection is an omega index over 8%. This research claims that levels greater than 8% correlate with a 90% reduction in the potential for a fatal heart attack. The vast majority of Americans have an omega index around 4%.

Are all omega three fatty acids pretty much the same?

I have tested numerous ethyl ester fish oils, flax seed oils and krill oils and have not found anywhere near the improvements in the omega index with these other types of omega three fatty acids. So all omega three supplements are not created equal! Most of the inferior brands of fish oil will be relatively inexpensive. A highly refined and purified triglyceride form omega three fish oil will cost between $20- $45 for a one month supply. I recommend investing in your health and spending a little extra when purchasing a fish oil supplement.

What are the health benefits of omega three fish oil?

Omega three fatty acids have been associated with a variety of positive health benefits. Omega three fatty acids are associated with a healthier heart, decreasing your risk of a heart attack, and new studies also indicate it may help lessen the chances of developing atrial fibrillation. Omega three fatty acids may help improve cognitive abilities and reduce depression. Increased circulation to the brain and the entire body is also one of the benefits of omega three consumption. Omega three fatty acids may slow down chromosomal aging by slowing down the rate the end cap of a chromosome (the telomere) shortens. Omega three is a very potent natural anti-inflammatory and may help with a variety of inflammatory conditions in the body. Many people notice improved health of their skin, nails and hair after consuming a good omega three supplement. Omega three consumption is proving to be helpful in patients with dry eye, meibomian gland dysfunction and macular degeneration. Ischemic stroke reduction and the treatment of elevated triglycerides are potential benefits of taking a good omega three fish oil. Children experience increased attention span and are less likely to be diagnosed with ADHD when they consume more omega three fatty acids. Taking a good triglyceride form omega three fish oil on a daily basis is one step in prevention that everyone at any age should be taking. Another recent study suggests that an increase in omega three fish oil may decrease prevalence of breast cancer and prostate cancer.

How do I choose between fish, krill, squid or flax seed oil?

Earlier in the article I stated, “All omega threes are not created equal.” This is so true. You hear infomercials, you see ads in magazines and the paper, and watch talk show hosts on television all promoting their particular omega three, all the while stating they offer “the best on the market”. How do you figure out what is legitimate and what is marketing hype? I think all omega three experts will agree that the most bio available form of omega three comes from marine sources like fish, squid or krill. Plant based omega three are not a readily available source of the two most important essential fatty acids, EPA and DHA. Flax seed oil is a poor source of omega three essential fatty acids and it oxidizes very quickly. It may be rancid by the time you consume it. Chia, hemp, perilla and marine plant life may be a better plant source of omega three fatty acids than flax seed oil. You must determine which form of omega three is right for you. If you have a shell fish allergy you should stay away from krill oil since it is possible to have an allergic reaction to krill oil. The proteins and antigens are not refined out of the krill oil. I think krill has a future as a good alternative to omega three fish oil; however the concentration of krill in most supplements is still relatively low and quite expensive. Krill does have phospholipids that improve the absorption of this omega three and a small amount of astaxanthin (a super carotenoid) naturally in the oil. If there becomes available a more concentrated, highly refined krill oil on the market, then I may change my mind. However, at this time the majority of krill oil only has approximately 40 to 100 mg per serving of total omega three and this amount has shown very limited improvement in the omega three index and other omega blood studies we have been analyzing. Krill oil studies are very limited at this time and therefore it is very difficult to determine the potential positive or negative impact krill may have. A good quality omega three concentrated triglyceride fish oil will have an omega three value of approximately 1500-1600 per serving combined EPA, DHA and DPA. There are some that say krill is being over harvested in the Antarctic region and this could hurt the ecological system. This is why Whole Foods pulled all krill off the shelves in early 2010.

Get a good quality highly refined triglyceride form fish oil

I think squid oil has a future as a player in the omega three industry, but currently I do not recommend it since it is still an ethyl ester form fish oil. However, once squid oil is available in the triglyceride form I think it will be a good alternative to TG form fish oil. There is a class action suit that was initiated in early 2010 claiming many of the ethyl ester fish oils that are purchased at the local drug store, warehouse club or vitamin store were filled with higher than acceptable levels of contaminants, especially PCPs. Consumers must be careful when purchasing fish oil from a local store or on the Internet unless you know what you are getting. Ethyl ester fish oils may taste and smell bad due to a fast rate of oxidation. These oils have a much poorer rate of absorption than a triglyceride form fish oil and may have higher than the acceptable levels of contaminants in the oil. I recommend spending a little extra money to get a good quality highly refined triglyceride form fish oil and start to gain the valuable health benefits of omega three fatty acids from fish oil. When looking at the label make sure it states triglyceride form or TG form fish oil on the bottle. If it doesn’t say it, it probably isn’t a triglyceride form.

Omega-3 Fish Oil, A Natural Treatment For Dry Eyes

There are some great nutritional approaches that may improve the treatment of dry eye syndrome, however most eye care providers, MDs, DOs and ODs are underutilizing this complimentary nutritional support for dry eyes.

Keeping an eye on Macular DegenerationFirst and foremost our diets and lifestyles need to be overhauled. In America our diets are caloric dense and nutrient deficient, consisting of way too much omega-6 fatty acids (oils from soy, corn, cottonseed, canola, sunflower and safflower), saturated fats and trans fats, thus increasing the chance of inflammation in our bodies. The typical western diet has too high an intake of omega-6 and too low an intake of omega-3 fatty acids; this is associated with increased levels of cytokines, proteins that trigger inflammation. Inflammation is one of the root causes of dry eye syndrome (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) and many other systemic diseases. Therefore we must decrease our consumption of processed foods, fast foods, canned foods, commercially raised beef, chicken, turkey and farm raised fish and eat more wild fish, free range chicken and turkey, free roaming organic grass fed beef, more fruits and vegetables (organically grown if possible), drink more filtered water and get plenty of good sleep and exercise. Sleep deprivation and sedimentary lifestyle are also contributing factors that increase cortisol levels, stress and inflammation in the body.

Take omega-3 fish oil for essential fatty acids

The simplest way to offset the imbalance between omega-6 and omega-3 in our diets is to eat fewer foods that are high in omega-6 and more foods that are high in omega-3 and increase your intake of omega-3 fatty acids from a good omega three fish oil supplement. The best source of omega three comes from marine sources like sardines, mackerel, wild salmon, anchovies, krill and squid. Alternative vegetable sources of omega three fatty acids are plankton/algae, chia seed oil and flax seed oil. The more bioavailable form of omega three essential fatty acids will come from the marine sources mentioned. The numerous health benefits of omega three fatty acids have been studied thoroughly, with subjects getting omega three fish oil from consuming more fish or taking a fish oil omega three supplement.

Triglyceride based fish oil vs. ethyl ester fish oil

Omega three fish oil comes in two readily available forms over the counter at the local drug store or health food store. Ethyl ester fish oil and triglyceride fish oil are the two forms that can be purchased OTC (over the counter). The ethyl ester version of fish oil is less expensive and is being recommended less and less by health care providers that are in tune with nutrition. However many physicians are not aware of the difference between the two types of fish oil and thus may be still recommending the cheaper less bioavailable ethyl ester form of omega three. Be careful when purchasing omega three fish oil at the local drugstore or warehouse club because they can be contaminated with unhealthy levels of PCBs and most contain ethanol. Most OTC omega three fish oils are ethyl ester based fish oil. The purification process uses ethanol to distill and concentrate the fish oil and the process to remove the ethanol after distillation is expensive. This additional processing expense to re-convert ethyl ester based fish oil back to the natural triglyceride form is the main reason companies are utilizing the ethyl ester version. Most fish oil that is associated with burping up a nasty fish taste is the ethyl ester version. The ethyl ester version has decreased absorption over triglyceride based fish oil and potential free radical damage exists with ethanol. Some studies have indicated that if ethyl ester fish oil is consumed with a high fat meal it will improve its absorption. Doesn’t ethanol cause dehydration too? So why in the world would anyone take ethyl ester fish oil, especially if they have dry eyes? Ethanol is an additive used in gasoline and is a fuel used in high performance race cars. It’s not something to put in your stomach. Fish oil should be consumed in the form that is found naturally in the sea, the natural triglyceride form. If you are not sure about the product you are taking, you can call the customer service number on the back of your fish oil supplement bottle and ask what form the fish oil is in. Small dosages of ethyl ester fish oil taken with food are probably relatively safe, but with more and more patients taking higher dosages of this form who knows what potential complications we could see in the future? Spend a little extra when purchasing an omega three fish oil and obtain the triglyceride form!

A simple test you can perform at home is to squeeze your fish oil into a Styrofoam cup and see what happens after fifteen minutes. If the cup starts to melt, then it is the ethyl ester based fish oil. You may want to think twice about consuming it or giving it to your children or grandparents.

However, if they have elevated triglycerides, arthritis, severe dry eyes or other health issues they may benefit by staying on four pills a day if recommended by their health care provider.

A good omega three fish oil is anti-inflammatory

There are many dry eye formulas on the market that have relatively low amounts of omega three fish oil combined with all kinds of natural anti-inflammatory nutrients, like curcumin, boswellia, ginger, while willow bark, nettles etc. –one must be careful with these! These nutrients are good for acute inflammatory conditions but not for long term use, since they will act as a COX-2 inhibitor and block the cyclooxygenase enzymes which are responsible for the bad pro-inflammatory prostaglandin PGE2 and the good anti-inflammatory benefits of series three prostaglandin PGE3! A prostaglandin is any member of a group of lipid compounds that are derived enzymatically from fatty acids and have important functions in the body. These natural COX-2 inhibitors block the good and the bad. PGE2 creates inflammation, however sometimes we need the PGE2 to cause inflammation in the healing process so we don’t want to block these long term, and we certainly don’t ever want to block the benefits of omega three fish oil, the anti-inflammatory series 3 prostaglandins PGE3. Adequate production of series 3 prostaglandins may protect against heart attack, stroke, arthritis, lupus and asthma, and new research may be proving it is beneficial for dry eye syndrome and macular degeneration. Keep in mind that the COX-2 inhibitors like Viox and Celebrex have gained a lot of negative media attention due to potential unwanted health complications. A much better way to help dry eyes and total body health is to maximize the body’s anti-inflammatory ability by giving it the nutrients necessary to do this. We do not want to potentially hinder the positive omega-3 fish oil benefits by using these natural COX-2 inhibitors long term. Omega three fatty acids from fish oil supplements are the best way to stimulate this PGE3 and help reduce inflammation in the body and eyes. For instance, arachidonic acid is a polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acid which controls a wide variety of bodily functions, especially those functions involving inflammation and the central nervous system. The EPA in fish oil actually has the ability to block the delta 5 desaturase enzyme (D5D) that is responsible for the inflammatory cascade of arachidonic acid in the omega 6 metabolic pathway.

Metabolic pathways of essential fatty acids

Another way to improve the metabolic pathways of essential fatty acids is to make sure the delta-6 desaturase enzyme (D6D) is working correctly. Alpha-linolenic acid is an organic compound found in canola, soybeans, walnuts, chia and flaxseed oil. D6D is crucial in the omega-3 conversion of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) to stearidonic acid and ultimately EPA and DHA. D6D is also crucial in the omega-6 conversion of linoleic acid (LA) to gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) which ultimately turns into good anti-inflammatory series one prostaglandin PGE1. A few specific vitamin and mineral cofactors that are extremely necessary for these conversions utilizing D6D are B3, B6, C, zinc and magnesium. Trans fats, saturated fats, alcohol intake, sugar, diabetes, poor pituitary function, low thyroid function, cancer, Sjögren’s syndrome, scleroderma, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s, liver cirrhosis, elevated cholesterol and immune dysfunction also can inhibit this conversion. As you can see there are many roadblocks that may interfere in the delta 6 desaturase enzyme system in both omega-6 and omega-3 metabolic pathways. This is why ALA (flax seed oil) is oftentimes a poor source of omega three EPA and DHA and why linoleic acid (an unsaturated omega-6 fatty acid found in corn, safflower and sunflower oil) converts oftentimes to the more inflammatory prostaglandins PGE2 instead of PGE1. Consuming more omega-3 from fish oil supplements (or a good fish source versus plant source) will bypass the entire D6D and D5D pathways in the omega-3 metabolism and allow for much more efficient and quicker utilization of EPA and DHA to the anti-inflammatory PGE3 and LTB5 (anti-inflammatory leukotriene, a lipid that suppresses inflammatory tissue reactions in the body) thus reaping the total health and ocular benefits.

Under optimal conditions adults can make both DHA and EPA from ALA but these optimal conditions are quite rare in today’s society. Conversion of omega-3 from plants into long chain omega-3 fatty acids found in marine sources is very low. Very minimal amounts of EPA and virtually no DHA are formed from supplemental alpha linolenic acid. So consume more omega-3 via fish oil versus vegetable source ALA. In order to bypass the D6D in the omega-6 pathway and make it more efficient GLA is needed. GLA is found in borage oil, black currant seed oil, evening primrose oil and blue green algae. GLA will then convert to DGLA which ultimately converts to anti-inflammatory PGE1 or pro-inflammatory PGE2.

Healthy diet plus a good omega three fish oil

Following a lifestyle including a proper diet (like the hunter gatherer or Mediterranean diets, from the era before humans suffered from diseases of civilization), consuming more omega-3 (from fish or products like Fortifeye Super Omega), reducing your omega-6 intake and taking a good multi-vitamin (like Fortifeye Complete One-a-Day) may increase the conversion of DGLA to PGE1 and decrease the conversion down the arachidonic pathway to PGE2 and LTB4 (pro-inflammatory leukotrienes). PGE1 is a good prostaglandin, has potent anti-inflammatory benefits and may help with overall health and better tear secretion. The combination of a good omega three fish oil like Fortifeye Super Omega and GLA may improve overall health and dry eye syndrome. You will have to combine this with the proper diet and hydration. Remember, more is not better-too much GLA may actually increase arachidonic acid and inflammation from PGE2-so always take GLA with triglyceride based fish oil, and not without it.

Lastly one must eat foods with a low GI (glycemic index) and decrease high GI foods such as potatoes, white pasta, white bread and white rice. This will stop the pancreas from secreting fluctuating amounts of insulin. Elevated insulin, due to lots of refined carbohydrates, will stimulate more conversion of GLA into the pro-inflammatory pathway of arachidonic acid and thus more of the bad prostaglandins PGE2 and LTB4.

Reduce inflammation and improve dry eye symptoms

So in review, eat a ‘hunter gatherer type of diet’. This means lots of fresh vegetables and fruits, nuts and seeds, wild fish, grass fed organically raised beef, organically raised poultry and whole grains. Eliminate or reduce processed foods, refined foods, fast foods, sodas, sugar and salt. Drink plenty of filtered water, green tea and red wine in moderation. Take a good multivitamin like Fortifeye Complete One-A-Day or Fortifeye Complete Plus, take two to four Fortifeye Super Omega pills daily (or an equivalent omega three fish oil) at different times of the day with food, take a GLA supplement at the same time you take one of the fish oil supplements, and get some exercise and a good night of sleep. Omega three is quite a buzz word lately.

The world is going through an omega three explosion. You hear about the positive health benefits from increased consumption of omega three fatty acids on talk shows, advertisements, health food stores, drug stores, the Internet and from your friends and physicians. There are so many different means of obtaining omega three fatty acids that it becomes quite confusing. Currently the best and most bioavailable form of omega three fatty acids is derived from marine sources. Fish oil, krill oil and squid oil (calamari) have the highest most bioavailable forms of omega three fatty acids. Fish oil currently has by far the most clinical research linking the positive health benefits to omega three out of the three mentioned. The shelves at the supermarket, health food stores and drug stores are filled with different brands, concentrations and derivatives of omega three fish oil. The typical consumer can become very confused when attempting to purchase an omega three fish oil while relying on a store clerk with very little education to make a recommendation.

All omega three fish oils are not created equal!

It is essential to consume only the highest quality, purest omega three fish oil for optimal health. Recently Good Morning America made the public aware of the potential contaminants that are in certain fish oil products sold over the counter. Currently there is an ongoing lawsuit aimed at some fish oil companies and drug stores that are selling products that had potentially health threatening amounts of contaminants like PCBs in their oils. PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) are persistent organic pollutants banned in 1979 but still present in ocean waters. One should only purchase omega three fish oil that has been thru a molecular distillation refining process to reduce any potential contaminants.

The most reputable and experienced fish oil processing plants are in Norway

Make sure your fish oil is coming from a state of the art production facility based in Norway. The facility should be GMP certified and NSF certified as well. In addition to NSF and GMP certification, the plant should be drug licensed by the Norwegian health authorities. These are the highest standards for regulating fish oil factories. Look for something on the bottle that says “Product of Norway”.

What types of fish are being used for the fish oil?

The highest quality omega three fish oils are derived from wild caught, non threatened small plankton feeding anchovies, sardines and mackerel from the deep clear pacific waters off the coast of South America. Harvesting these types of fish promotes a truly eco-friendly and sustainable marine source. These are relatively small and young fish that have a higher percentage of omega three fatty acids and are characterized by especially low levels of environmental impurities. If the fish oil label states the oil is coming from fish that are caught off the coast of Norway, or in pristine Norwegian waters, or in the Atlantic Ocean, think twice about purchasing that product. That statement is very misleading since the Norwegian factories are processing and purifying the crude oil that is sent to them from the fish caught in the Southern Hemisphere. They are not catching the fish in the Norwegian waters. Norwegian salmon are not wild salmon, they are usually farm raised. Stay away from farm raised salmon since they potentially can be high in pro-inflammatory fats called omega six and can be deficient in omega threes. The reddish orange color of a wild salmon comes from natural astaxanthin while the orange color in farm raised salmon comes from synthetic astaxanthin. You should be careful when purchasing salmon oil unless you know it is coming from wild caught Alaskan salmon. Ask to see an independent analysis of the fish oils, especially if using salmon oil. A-linolenic acid (ALA), which are omega three fatty acids derived primarily from vegetable sources, should be at less than one percent (average .85) in wild Alaskan salmon, while farmed salmon contain an average of 2 to 2.5% as a result of the composition of feed they are eating, according to a paper published by J Molkentin in European Food Research and Technology (2007). This research revealed a method for distinguishing organically farmed salmon from wild Atlantic salmon. The omega three to omega six ratio is different in farm raised versus wild salmon as well. And new research showed that, compared with farmed salmon, wild salmon had a much more favorable omega-3/omega-6 ratio:

  • Farmed Atlantic salmon had an omega-3/omega-6 ratio of 6.5 to 1(26% omega-3 fat / 4.4% omega-6 fat).
  • Wild Atlantic salmon had an omega-3/omega-6 ratio of 19 to 1(26.7% omega-3 fat / 1.4% omega-6 fat).

Smell and taste is extremely important

If something doesn’t smell or taste good, the consumer will not consume it. High quality fish oil will have a very pleasant smell and taste whether it is in liquid form or in a gel cap. The refining process has great impact on smell and taste. Pure unrefined products often times have a very unpleasant sensory characteristic. If you bite into a gel cap and the oil smells and tastes rancid, think twice about taking it since the quality may be questionable. Make sure only natural flavoring is used and no artificial sweeteners are used to improve taste. Read the label. The Norwegians have done extensive research in the development of a good tasting natural fish oil.

Using an eco-friendly sustainable food source is recommended when looking for a good fish oil

The definition is: “Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” The use of anchovies, sardines and mackerel for omega three fish oil is truly to use an eco-friendly and sustainable source.

Make sure the fish oil has gone through molecular distillation to refine and eliminate any potential contaminants

A triple molecular distillation process will ensure the highest purity. Independent third party contaminant analysis of each batch should be routinely done. Most reputable fish oil companies can make an analysis available to the consumer with some advanced notice. If the fish oil is not molecularly distilled it may have hazardous levels of contaminants like PCBs. Oils that are not refined will very likely contain trace allergens. People with seafood allergies can react to unrefined oils.

Two types of readily available omega three fish oils are ethyl ester and triglyceride

The natural triglyceride form of fish oil should go thru molecular distillation to purify the oils. A typical natural triglyceride form of fish oil will have a concentration of about 180 EPA and 120 DHA. The synthetic ethyl ester version uses ethanol in the distillation and concentration process during transesterification to produce a higher concentration of EPA and DHA. During this process the natural triglyceride backbone is replaced with an ethyl ester backbone. This produces a fairly pure and highly concentrated omega three fish oil. This concentrated form of fish oil can obtain 450 EPA and 300 DHA in one capsule. In order to convert the ethyl ester back to the more natural triglyceride form, one more step of transesterification must be done to replace the ethyl ester based backbone with a triglyceride backbone the way it occurs naturally in ocean fish. Many fish oil companies will not go that extra step due to cost! It is almost 50% more expensive to go through this final step to convert the synthetic ethyl ester fish oil back to more natural triglyceride based fish oil. Almost all of the leading authorities on omega three fish oil will agree that the triglyceride form is more stable and bioavailable over the cheaper synthetic ethyl ester version. Most patients using this triglyceride form of fish oil will have fewer problems with burp back of the nasty fish taste common to some fish oils. Ethanol is a free radical and ethanol can potentially cause free radical damage in the body. The amount of ethanol in this form of fish oil is relatively low (.1%-.5%) but certain groups of populations should be avoiding ethanol completely. You can do a quick test at home to see what type of fish oil you have. If fish oil eats thru a Styrofoam cup in thirty minutes or less, this may be related to the ethanol content. Spend a little extra money and ensure you are getting the most concentrated bioavailable form of fish oil, and take only triglyceride based fish oil. If it doesn’t say natural triglyceride or TG form, then it is probably ethyl ester based. Certain European countries like Denmark do not allow the sale of ethyl ester fish oil over the counter, only the triglyceride form. Ethyl ester fish oil in these countries is controlled with prescription. The overall cost per absorption ratio makes the concentrated triglyceride form of fish oil a better value than the ethyl ester version.

It may lower CRP as much as statin drugs without the potential side effects. Vitamin C was one of the nutrients in the AREDS study that was beneficial for macular degeneration. High dosages of vitamin C may be beneficial at lowering intraocular pressure in patients with glaucoma.

Is a group of fat-soluble pro hormones in two main forms; D2 (meritocracies) and D3 (collectable). Vitamin D is naturally produced by the human body when exposed to sunlight. Vitamin D regulates calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood by promoting their absorption from food in the intestines, and by promoting re-absorption of calcium in the kidneys. It also promotes bone formation and internalization. Vitamin D affects the immune system by promoting interspersion, phagocytes, and anti-tumor activity. After Vitamin D is produced in the skin from sun exposure or consumed in food it is converted in the liver and kidneys to the active form called clairol and then is released into circulation to specific organs. Vitamin D deficiencies are now being linked to several diseases including hypertension, diabetes, tuberculosis, cancer, periodontal disease, multiple sclerosis, collagen vascular diseases, seasonal affective disorder, depression, Parkinson’s and macular degeneration. New science (NHANES III) indicates that patients with higher serum levels of vitamin D may reduce the risk of macular degeneration. Vitamin D has anti inflammatory properties associated with it that may prove beneficial to many health and eye related diseases including macular degeneration. More studies on the use of vitamin D3 and eye disease will be necessary to prove these beneficail aspects. Twenty minutes of sun exposure in fair skinned people (3 to 6 times longer in dark skinned) between 12 and 2 p.m. will produce approximately 10,000 IU’s of vitamin D3. Physicians are now recommending more sun exposure or additional Vitamin D thru foods or vitamins for the high risk populations: elderly, darkly pigmented people, patients on medications that may block the absorption of fat soluble vitamins and people that are not in the sun very often. It is a good idea to have blood calcidiol (25-hydroxy-vitamin D) levels measured especially if you are in a high risk group. This is a current classification level that can give you some guide lines:

• 0-14.9 ng/mL = Severely deficient
• 15.0-31.9 ng/mL = Mildly deficient
• 32.0-100.0 ng/mL = Optimal
• >100.0 ng/mL = Toxicity possible

A fat-soluble vitamin in eight forms that is an important antioxidant. Naturally occurring vitamin E exists in eight chemical forms (alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and delta-tocopherol and alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and delta-tocotrienol).The natural forms are usually labeled with the letter “d” (for example, d-gamma-tocopherol), whereas synthetic forms are labeled “dl” (for example, dl-alpha-tocopherol). Of the eight forms, alpha-tocopherol is traditionally recognized as the most active form of vitamin E but new studies suggest that gamma tocopherol exhibits the anti-inflammatory effects. From GLA, the body forms dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA). This is one of the body’s three sources of eicosanoids (along with AA and EPA.) DGLA is the precursor of the prostaglandin PGH1, which in turn forms PGE1 and the thromboxane TXA1. PGE1 has a role in regulation of immune system function. GLA is unique among the omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (linoleic acid, GLA, and arachidonic acid) in its potential to suppress tumor growth and metastasis.
