Natural Treatment of Dry Eyes and Meibomian Gland Dysfunction by Michael Lange OD

Natural Treatment of Dry Eyes and Meibomian Gland Dysfunction by Michael Lange OD

Dr. Michael Lange in front of Lange Eye Institute in The Villages Florida     Michael Lange OD founder of Lange Eye Care and syndicated talk show host has been utilizing the latest in natural treatments for dry eye and meibomian gland dysfunction for over 20 years with great sucess.   Dr. Lange discusses his protocol for dry eye and meibomian gland problem patients.

Natural treatment for dry eyes and  meibomian gland dysfunction  is a combination of  lid hygiene,  diet,  hydration,  correct ratio of supplements and proper lubricating eye drops. Blepharitis  a condition that causes the  eye lids to become inflamed and crusty secondarily to a host of pathogens. Meibomian gland dysfunction is when the small glands along the lower and upper lid margins become blocked and inflammed.  These conditions  will lead to lid infections and dry eyes if proper treatment isn’t initiated.  The eye lids accumalate  viral, bacterial, allergic and parasitic flora so it is crucial  the lids are kept clean.  Dr. Lange recommends seeing your local optometrist or ophthalmologist to determine  if you have  blepharitis  and if so what kind?  Most forms of blepharitis can be  controlled with a special lid scrub foam like ocusoft. cliradex_largeSome forms of blepharitis are related to a parasite called demodex. If demodex is in the lashes and the hair follicles then traditional lid scrubs will not help . Dr. Lange recommends use of a commercially available product called Cliradex to treat this type of demodex condition.  The combination of lid scrubs with ocusoft then followed by a wipe of the Cliradex will get most forms of blepharitis under control within one month. However if this condition does not respond to this therapy then a topical and sometimes oral medication may be prescribed.

sa6936Dr. Lange recommends using hot compresses two to three times a day for ten minutes with gentle massage of the lid margins.  This will help to liquify the blocked meibomian glands and allow for a much healthier tear film.  A patient can use a warm wash cloth for this but the simplest and most effective way to heat up the meibomian glands is to use a Bruder eye hydrating Mask, this mask retails for $25 and  last for years.  The combination of hot compresses and lid scrubs will open up the meibomian glands and allow a much healthier secretion of tears resulting in less dry eye symptomology.

Michael Lange OD, CNS also states that an over haul  in the typical American diet is crucial for dry eye .  imagesCAGCOZXCMost Americans are eating a highly refined and overly processed diet very high in omega 6.  He recommends patients adapt an all organic, gluten free paleo diet.  This is an anti inflammatory diet that helps the body detoxify.  The typical American diet is pro inflammatory and is one of the reasons we have so much inflammation in the body. Inflammation is a root cause of dry eyes. Natural treatment of dry eyes starts with adjustment in the diet.  Michael Lange OD sees many patients with meibomian gland dysfunction improve dramatically  with just an improvement in diet.

imagesCA4IVLKCMost Americans are dehydrated! Dehydration is also a major contributing factor to dry eyes.  Michael Lange OD, CNS preaches on his syndicated radio show and to his patients  to drink half your body weight in ounces of spring water.  Drink spring water, not distilled water or reverse osmosis water. Spring water is high in minerals and relatively alkaline. Reverse osmosis and distilled water is acidic  and mineral free.  If a patient drinks a lot of distilled water or reverse osmosis water then due to the laws imagesCAYJ2JATof osmosis the minerals in the body can be leached out causing mineral deficiency in the body.  This can aggravate a dry eye condition.

Dr Lange also recommends drinking 1-2 glasses of coconut water a day to gain some valuable minerals like magnesium and potassium.

OneimagesCAII3283 cup of coffee a day may be beneficial for dry eyes however more than one cup becomes a diuretic. To counter effect the coffee one must drink three  additional cups of water for every cup of coffee. Nutritional supplements for dry eyes and blocked meibomian glands are becoming the gold standard because they work.  Dr. Lange recommends a minimum of 1600 mg of triglyceride form omega 3 fish oil daily for anyone under 240lbs.  If you are over 240 lbs then 3000-4000 mg of triglyceride form omega 3 fish oil is recommended.  The addition of 6 mg of a super carotenoid called astaxanthin has a synergistic effect when taken with omega 3 fish oil.  Astaxanthin is one of the most potent natural anti inflammatory/ antioxidant nutrients.  Omega 3 in the triglyceride form helps the carotenoid astaxanthin absorb more efficiently.  Astaxanthin helps to reduce eye strain , improve focusing ability of the eye and  reduce eye fatigue associated with prolonged near point or computer work.  Astaxanthin helps control oxidative stress and inflammation.  The combination of 1600 mg of omega 3 and 6 mg of astaxanthin dramatically reduces dry and tired eye symptoms.  Michael Lange OD, CNS is the formulator of two specific supplements he developed for Dry Tired eyes: Fortifeye Super Omega has 1600mg of TG form Omega 3  and Fortifeye Focus has 6mg of astaxanthin, 6mg of lutein and 400 mcg of zeaxanthin.  Learn more at .  Astaxanthin also has some other great health benefits; blocks the harmful uv and blue light from the sun acting as a natural sun screen, minimizes fine lines and wrinkles in the face, astaxanthin improves choroidal circulation, lowers CRP and cholesterol, improves muscle endurance and muscle recovery and has a very high ORAC value so great at quenching free radicals.   Wild Alaskan Salmon is a power food because it has both omega 3 in the triglyceride form and astaxanthin.  20130930_150210 - 2_1 The combination of Fortifeye Super Omega and Fortifeye Focus will  help  reduce inflammation in the lid margins and the meibomian glands and  improve the quality of tear film that is secreted dramatically.  This combination will also help lower inflammation in the entire body .  Its maximum effect takes three to four months but many people notice significant improvement in two weeks.  One last nutrient that has some benefit  for dry eyes is GLA. However the ratio of GLA is crucial  if its going to work.  GLA is an omega 6 and if too much is taken it will increase inflammation in the body.  GLA from black currant seed oil seems to work the best due to the fact that is has ALA (vegetable source of omega 3 ) as well as GLA.  Dr. Lange has tried many different combinations of GLA and Omega 3 in extremely busy dry eye practices in Florida and has come to the conclusion that  a ratio of close to 10-1 omega 3 to GLA is ideal natural treatment for dry eyes.  For dry eye treatment he recommends  140-160mg of GLA to 1600 mg of omega 3.   Michael Lange OD, CNS says the triple whammy for natural dry eye treatment is  Fortifeye Super omega 2 -4 per day depending on weight, 1 Fortifeye Focus, and 140-160 mg of GLA from Black Currant seed oil.

The final part to natural treatment of dry eyes is to add a good lubricating eye drop.  Michael Lange OD, CNS likes to use24.00 preservative free lubricating eye drops if they are going to be used more than two times a day.  Oasis tears Oasis tears plus, Retaine MGD and Blink Tears  are three lubricating eye drops Dr Lange uses on most of his patients.   He likes Blink Tears  and Oasis because they both have a form of hyluranic acid in them that helps eliminate dry eye symptoms longer than most OTC artificial tears.  Often times in very dry eyes  related to meibomian gland dysfunction he will add Retaine MGD preservative free drops along with Oasis or Blink Tears to get broader coverage.

In summary , when a combination of proper lid hygiene, diet, hydration, correct supplements and good artificial tears are used most dry eye condition  that  are a result of blepharitis and meibomian gland dysfunction will start to improve.  Patients  with dry eyes have come from all over the country  to The Lange Eye Institute in The Villages Florida to learn more about natural treatment for dry eyes.  Learn more about Lange Eye Care at  and learn more about all the products discussed in this article at  to order or get more information on Dry Eye Nutrition  u can call 866 503 9746 another good site for Natural dry eye treatment is

Dry Eye Nutrition

Michael Lange OD, CNS 10/10/2011

Is dry eye nutrition overlooked? Learn how vitamins, fish oil, omega-3 and astaxanthin can help improve dry eyes. Is your dry eye nutrition affected by a low omega index? Dr. Michael P. Lange OD CNS discusses omega-3, eye nutrition, omega-3 fish oil, supplements, dry eye vitamins, omega fish, eye symptoms, health, dry eye symptoms, triglyceride form omega-3, supplements for dry eye, natural treatment of dry eyes, vitamins for dry eyes, 6mg of astaxanthin, dry eye condition, dry eye supplements, eye condition, eye diet, carotenoid, Fortifeye FOCUS, Fortifeye Complete One-A-Day and Fortifeye Super Omega.

dry eye nutrition
Dry eye nutriton can include diet, supplements, and a healthier lifestyle

Dry eye is something that affects all of us sooner or later in life. Most optometrists and ophthalmologists will treat dry eyes with topical artificial tears and prescription medications or punctal plugs. Many patients will get symptomatic relief with these traditional approaches for the treatment of dry eyes. However, very few doctors will discuss dry eye nutrition with their patients. I have seen the power of proper nutrition for dye eyes in clinical practice for almost 20 years. One of the most frequent questions I am asked on my live talks show “Ask The Doctor” is, “What are good supplements for dry eye?” or, “Are there dry eye vitamins that really work?” The answer is yes, there are many dry eye supplements and vitamins for dry eyes on the market today. However, “Do dry eye vitamins actually work?” is the big question. Dry eye nutrition is one of the key discussions I have with my patients at Lange Eye Care. Most patients I see with a dry eye condition have never been educated on the power of nutrition for dry eye treatment. People in today’s society want to become proactive in their overall health and are looking for a healthy option to medications. Natural dry eye treatments are becoming very popular because they work! A consumer must be very careful when shopping for dry eye vitamins over the counter at the local drug store or warehouse club because most of these over the counter supplements for dry eyes are filled with dyes, trans fats and synthetic derivatives that may actually cause harm with long term usage. The typical vitamins for dry eye that are available commercially are also usually relatively weak in concentration and may not have much therapeutic benefit.

Dry eye nutrition, vitamins and treatment

Fortifeye Super Omega Fish Oil
Fortifeye Super Omega Fish Oil is the newest, most concentrated and purified omega three fish oil by Fortifeye™

Dry eye nutrition consists of a dry eye diet as well as dry eye vitamins. Both of these work together in the natural treatment of dry eyes. When the traditional approaches for dry eye treatment are combined with the natural dry eye treatment it is even more effective. First and foremost I will make sure the patient adjusts their diet to one similar to the “paleo diet” and I will make sure they are drinking plenty of the correct fluids.

The next step in dry eye nutrition is to get the patient on a good triglyceride form omega-3 fish oil like Fortifeye Super Omega. The size of the patient and the severity of the dry eye condition will determine how many Fortifeye Super Omega gel caps I recommend. For anyone over 250 lbs I recommend 3-4 capsules or if they have a significant dry eye. For everyone else I recommend two Fortifeye Super Omegas a day. Fortifeye Super Omega has an EPA of 860 and a DHA of 580 in two gel caps. This omega 3 fish oil has been tested in an omega index study and is able to move the omega index on an average over 9.1%. This is a true therapeutic dosage in just two gel caps per day on most individuals. The average American has an omega index of only 4%. This is the ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 in our blood. We are finding our patients with an omega index above 9% have fewer dry eye symptoms than the ones below this level.

Fortifeye Super Omega is being called dry eye fish oil by our patients that have reduced their dry eye symptoms while taking this form of omega-3 fish oil. Fortifeye Super Omega was developed as a chewable for those that can’t swallow it. It has a good lemon flavor and will not cause any burp back or after taste. This omega-3 fish oil is very similar in concentration to prescription fish oil that costs ten times the amount. I also recommend eating more sardines and wild Alaskan salmon as part of the dry eye diet.

Introducing astaxanthin – the super carotenoid

Fortifeye Focus
Fortifeye Focus is a combination of three carotenoids—astaxanthin, lutein and zeaxanthin.

Many people suffering with dry eyes will benefit significantly from the addition of the Fortifeye Super Omega in a 2-4 per day dosage but some may need the addition of one more nutrient called astaxanthin. I have been using 6 mg of astaxanthin in patients that have dry tired eye symptoms with some very positive results.

Astaxanthin has many potential health benefits for the visual system and the entire body. Astaxanthin is a super carotenoid found in specific algae. This carotenoid at 6mg per day dosage can help to relieve tired fatigued eyes. Clinical studies have proven that 6mg of astaxanthin actually improves the focusing ability of the human eye.

Astaxanthin, dry eye nutrition and the omega index

Ever since I have seen the studies on astaxanthin I began using it clinically to help with eye fatigue. I have found that dry eyes and tired eyes go hand in hand and the addition of 6mg of astaxanthin (Fortifeye FOCUS) to 2 gel caps of Fortifeye Super Omega have been extremely helpful when used together in dry eye nutrition. Now routinely I use the combination of Fortifeye Super Omega and Fortifeye FOCUS as my supplements for dry eye. Many of our patients are omega-3 deficient and have an excess of omega-6. Simply by having an omega index blood study done the typical patient will see if they are deficient or not in omega-3. Once you get your omega index levels upward of 8% you are not only in a heart healthy zone but you will also be in the zone that may help decrease your dry eye symptoms.

A natural approach to dry eye supplements

Fortifeye Complete One-A-Day Multivitamin
Fortifeye Complete One-A-Day Multivitamin, an advanced formulation based on the latest clinical studies. It is a combination of synergistically blended whole foods, phytonutients, vitamins, minerals and enzymes.

In summary, dry eye nutrition works when taking the appropriate dry eye supplements combined with dietary and lifestyle modifications. Eat a “paleo” type of diet; get plenty of sleep, and no smoking or alcohol abuse. Drink half your body weight in ounces of filtered water every day. Take a minimum of 860 mg EPA and 580 DHA from a good triglyceride form omega-3 fish oil. Take 6mg of astaxanthin daily.

I also recommend taking a good multivitamin (Fortifeye Complete One-A-Day) with no beta carotene or vitamin A to ensure that there are no nutritional deficiencies that could interfere with the entire metabolic pathway. Try to see an eye care provider that is in tune with nutrition routinely as well. Here’s to your health!
